Eid-ul-Fitr, “Eid-ul-fitr”, Eid al-Fitr, Id-ul-Fitr, or Id al-Fitr (Arabic: عيد الفطر ‘Īdu l-Fiṭr), often abbreviated to Eid, is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting (sawm) and lasts for 3 days. Eid is an Arabic word meaning “festivity”, while Fiṭr means “breaking the fast”. What is Eid Al-Adha?
Eid al-Adha is the second and final Eid Islamic celebration of the year. It takes place on the tenth day of the Islamic month Dhul-Hijjah, the last month (12th) of the Islamic calendar. It commemorates the completion of the Hajj pilgrimage. Although only pilgrims in Mecca participate in the Hajj fully, Muslims around the world join them in celebrating Eid Al-Adha.
The Hajj pilgrimage draws millions of Muslims from around the world every year to Mecca. It is the largest annual gathering of humanity anywhere. Timed to the Muslim lunar calendar, the Hajj is followed by the celebrations of the three-day festival of Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, which symbolizes Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Ishmael, to obey God. According to the Qura’an, Ibrahim was about to sacrifice his son when a voice from heaven stopped him and allowed him to sacrifice a ram instead. The feast re-enacts Ibrahim’s obedience by sacrificing a cow or ram.
The meat from the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha is mostly given away to others. One-third is eaten by immediate family, one-third is given away to relatives and friends, and one-third is donated to the poor. The act symbolizes our willingness to give up things that are of benefit to us or close to our hearts, in order to follow Allah’s commands. It also symbolizes our willingness to give up some of our own bounties, in order to strengthen ties of friendship and help those who are in need. We recognize that all blessings come from Allah, and we should open our hearts and share with others.
The symbolism is in the attitude - a willingness to make sacrifices in our lives in order to stay on the Straight Path. Each of us makes small sacrifices, giving up things that are fun or important to us. A true Muslim, one who submits his or herself completely to the Lord, is willing to follow Allah’s commands completely and obediently. It is this strength of heart, purity in faith, and willing obedience that our Lord desires from us.
History / Origin :
Allah (The God) said in the holy Qura’an (37:99-113)
{ And [then] he said, “Indeed, I will go to [where I am ordered by] my Lord; He will guide me.۞ My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous.” ۞ So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy. ۞ And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, “O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think.” He said, “O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.” ۞ And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead, ۞ We called to him, “O Abraham, ۞ You have fulfilled the vision.” Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. ۞ Indeed, this was the clear trial. ۞ And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice, ۞ And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations: ۞ “Peace upon Abraham.” ۞ Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. ۞ Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.۞ And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous. ۞ And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good and the clearly unjust to himself.۞ }

What is Eid Al-Fitr?
Eid ul-Fitr, aka Eid, falls on the first day of Shawwal, the month which follows Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. Eid is an Arabic term meaning “festivity” or “celebration,” while fitr means “to break the fast”.
During Eid, Muslims thank Allah for the help and strength given to them throughout the previous month and celebrate the end of fasting by gathering with friends and family, preparing sweet delicacies, wearing new clothes, giving each other gifts and putting up lights and other decorations in their homes.
Before the day of Eid, during the last few days of Ramadan, each Muslim family gives a determined amount as a donation to the poor. This donation is of actual food — rice, barley, dates, rice, etc. — to ensure that the needy can have a holiday meal and participate in the celebration. This donation is known as Zakat Al-Fitr (charity of fast-breaking)
